Andrew's Story

How the Learn‑Apply Cycle Was Born

Twenty-four years ago, I moved to the U.S. after middle school in Korea. I thought I'd be fluent in English after a year or two, but instead found myself using the same basic phrases over and over. I had almost no American friends and felt like an outsider for over 10 years.

Then I got a chance to go to grad school in Canada. This time, I decided to be different. I joined English conversation meetups, found communities for international students, and even moved into a community house with Canadians.

The results were amazing...

In just 1-2 years, my English improved more than it had in 13 years in the U.S. I made tons of friends and felt like I truly belonged for the first time.

Through this experience, I realized the key to learning a language is REAL CONVERSATION balanced with focused learning. You need to learn useful phrases, then immediately apply them in real-life situations, get feedback, and repeat.

The Learn-Apply Cycle

This is what I call the Learn-Apply Cycle. It's how I finally improved my English in Canada, and it completely changed my life. The MAC Program was born out of this experience and the amazing communities I've been part of.

My hope is that MAC helps people not just learn a language, but build real, meaningful connections and open doors to new possibilities in life—just like it did for me.
